Chris Nungary
Sound Designer, Mixer, and Music Editor
Chris Nungary’s journey into the world of sound and music has been a lifelong passion. From his earliest memories of listening to classic rock records with his father, including the likes of Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath, Chris was captivated by the power of music and its ability to evoke emotion.
Growing up, Chris immersed himself in music, joining his school’s marching band, and later diving into grunge, alternative, and punk rock. Alongside his musical interests, Chris developed a fascination with film and the integral role that sound plays in storytelling. His journey led him to start a punk band in South Lake Tahoe during his 20s, where he and his bandmates played countless shows, opening for musical icons and living out their rock ’n roll dreams.
At 30, after years of performing, Chris’s curiosity about the behind-the-scenes side of music and production led him to pursue audio production at the Art Institute of Austin. It was there that he found his calling. He packed up a van and moved to Austin, where he quickly immersed himself in the music scene. Chris honed his skills at Good Danny’s Studio, learning from the legendary Danny Reisch. Through hard work and persistence - performing coffee runs, sweeping floors, and assisting on countless projects - Chris worked his way up, mastering the art of engineering and building connections in the music community.
After a pivotal move back to California, Chris found his next chapter in the commercial audio world. His role at Lime Studios, an advertising post-production powerhouse, introduced him to the fast-paced, high-stakes world of commercial mixing. His technical expertise and musical intuition earned him an assistant position working with senior mixer Joel Waters, where he learned the intricacies of commercial sound design. This new path led him to Walker Music, where Chris seamlessly blended his musical roots with commercial mixing, evolving into a chief engineer.
Now, as the Senior Mixer and Sound Designer for the West Coast branch of Squeak E Clean Studios, Chris is in his element, working on a wide range of projects across commercials, long-form film, documentaries, and interactive media. His approach is deeply rooted in his musical background, treating every mix as a musical composition - imbuing it with rhythm, dynamics, and emotional resonance that complements and elevates the visuals.
Chris Nungary stands at the forefront of sound design and mixing, with exciting projects on the horizon and a passion for using sound to tell powerful stories. His work continues to inspire, and his commitment to the craft remains unwavering.
